The swamps of South Carolina's Lowcountry are home to some of the most elusive whitetail bucks and call shy gobblers that I have ever encountered. They live in an area that will question your hunting ability each time you venture into its unique habitat and will make you wonder why you ever took up the challenge of hunting the low swamp bottoms of the south. A mature buck will live out his life in these swamps without human eyes ever falling on him. A wild gobbler will grow long hooked spurs because of the vast amount of water that lies between his roost and your position. Although you seldom come out of the swamps with a long spurred bird over your shoulder or struggling through the knee deep mud from the weight of a mature buck, you will never leave the swamp without something. It may be the memories of the tall ancient cypress trees, the brackish swamp waters with the many cypress knees scattered throughout its bottoms, or it just might be the solitude that you will find in this mysterious land. One thing is for sure, each time you venture in, you will indeed come out more blessed than when you took your first step into a Lowcountry swamp bottom.
